Since being admitted to practice law in 2001, Ryan has focused exclusively in the area of civil litigation. A large percentage of his cases deal with business, construction, real estate, and trust and estate disputes. He is admitted to practice in all state and federal courts in North Carolina and has handled cases in numerous counties across the state. He has also arbitrated a number of cases with the American Arbitration Association.

Ryan grew up in Angier, North Carolina. He graduated from Duke University in 1998 with a degree in public policy and economics. In 2001, he obtained his law degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After law school, he practiced for three years at Lewis & Roberts concentrating in commercial, construction and personal injury litigation. In 2005, he formed the firm of Shirley & Adams in downtown Raleigh. He joined Adams Howell in 2016.
